Five healthy tips to enjoy summer days

We've had the best summer ever, enjoying cool foods and drinks like ice cream. But there's no doubt that all that "good eating" has had some not-so-good effects on our skin.

After sending out an SOS (save our skin, that is) alert, beauty-turned-health editor-in-chief Jolene Hart came to our rescue with her book, "Eat Pretty: Nutrition for Beauty, Inside And Out."

Hart has poured all her knowledge—from the best foods for great skin and hair to those “beauty cheats” we should toss from our fridges and cupboards—into a helpful guide that's inspired us to take back control of our health.

While we highly recommend adding "Eat Pretty" to your reading list, here's a roundup of five healthy beauty tips so you can enjoy the last days of summer.

1. Eat beautiful—and cool. Water-rich foods like watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumber, celery, watercress, lemon, and coconut water keep your body cool when it's hot outside. They're also natural diuretics, so you'll be slim and bloat-free when it's time to wear your bikini.

2. Skip sun damage. Boost your anti-aging defenses from within with UV-protecting foods like tomatoes, carrots, watermelon, apricots, and greens containing lycopene, beta-carotene, and phytochemicals that help prevent UV damage to the skin. Don't forget a mineral-based natural sunscreen and a great pair of UV-filtering sunglasses.
